Ahmed Omar, MD, PhD, joined the cornea service at University Hospitals Eye Institute in Cleveland in May 2019. He is a graduate of Assiut Medical School, completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Assiut University Hospitals in Egypt, and joined their faculty in 2008. On scholarship from the Egyptian government, Dr. Omar joined Mayo Clinic in 2011 to conduct PhD research and then a medical retina fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He completed a cornea, refractive and external disease fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2016, and moved back to Egypt to share his cornea knowledge and experience with patients and colleagues. Dr. Omar helped establish an Egyptian government-sponsored program in 2017 to provide transplants for underprivileged Egyptians at Assiut University Hospitals. He taught his colleagues corneal transplants techniques so they could continue to provide excellent care when he returned to the United States in 2019.
